This standard applies to two types (Two related standards are listed in par. 9.2.) of diesel fuel (CAUTION: Fuel supplied according to this standard in warmer months may not be appropriate for year-round diesel operation.), SPECIAL and SPECIAL-LS (low sulphur) for use in high- and medium-speed diesel engines in underground mines.
Type SPECIAL fuel is intended for use where quantities of ventilating air are restricted and/or high operating temperatures exist.
Type SPECIAL-LS (a maximum sulphur of 0.05% by mass of the SPECIAL type) is intended for use as specified in par. 1.1.1 and for use in high-speed diesel engines designed to meet the stringent diesel exhaust emissions regulations (as promulgated in the U.S.A. by the EPA) for heavy-duty on-highway vehicles and engines.
